Leeds City Council Young Carers
Thursday, July 21st, 2011 | Posted in : |
‘Young carers’ are children and young people under 18 who provide, or intend to provide care, assistance or support to another family member affected by mental health problems, disability or alcohol or substance misuse. They carry out, often on a regular basis, significant substantial caring tasks, taking on a level of responsibility that is inappropriate to their age or development (SCIE Practice Guide 5, 2005).
According to the census of 2001, it is estimated that there are 175,000 young carers in the UK. According to BBC research in 2010, one in 12 children at school have a moderate to high level of caring responsibilities in the family.
The local authority and its partners responsibilities are to:
Reduce the impact on young carers – memorandum of understanding, think family protocol, family assessment, co-ordination of family support across services for adults and services for children
Aim to reduce the number of young people who feel obliged to take on or continue with an inappropriate caring role and/or to provide support to young carers to reduce the impact of caring responsibilities on their social, emotional and learning development.
The objectives of this commissioned service are to provide support to young carers by:
Enabling them to maximise the opportunities and benefits provided in universal settings such as schools, sports centres, youth provision, organised and informal out of school settings, and
Providing specific opportunities for those young carers whose circumstances mean that they need more targeted support.
