Zero Waste Solution for NHS Trusts- Rotherham General Hospital
Tuesday, March 02nd, 2010 | Posted in : Environment and Recycling, Health and Social Care, |
Waste created by the NHS continues to increase both by tonnage and by disposal cost and in 2007/08 waste management cost the NHS #71.2 million and one in every 100 tonnes of domestic waste generated in the UK comes from the NHS, with the vast majority going to landfill. Consequently it is widely recognised that NHS waste management practices are unsustainable and investment is needed in sound and sustainable waste management solutions that reduces cost, recovers value from waste where possible and reduce carbon emissions. Current practices will not deliver what is required and new solutions are urgently needed. In this context the Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust has identified a requirement for a ‘Hospital of Tomorrow - Zero Waste Solution’, a cost effective and sustainable waste management solution that reduces carbon emissions and eliminates the need for waste to be disposed of in landfill.
